The Priory School, established in 1947 and bordering Westmount, Quebec, is an outstanding independent, not-for-profit, co-educational, English elementary school offering classes from Kindergarten to Grade 6. The school is inclusive and embraces diversity, welcoming students from all backgrounds. It is a student-centred school, nurturing each child’s inherent curiosity, developing an enthusiasm for learning, and encouraging intellectual and creative initiative, preparing each child to be a responsible, accepting and self-confident global citizen.
The School is accredited by the Quebec Ministry of Education, Sports and Recreation, as well as by the Canadian Association of Independent Schools (CAIS), and is a member of the Quebec Association of Independent Schools (QAIS). The School has a population of 166 students with approximately 24 students per class, 13 full-time and 3 part-time teachers. The student:teacher ratio is 1:12.
The School is governed by a Board of Directors, of which the Head is an ex-officio member. The School is independent, receives no grants from any level of government, and enjoys a position of solid financial strength, with a balanced operating budget. The Priory School is in a strong position, both academically and financially.
The Head of The Priory School is the academic and pedagogical leader of the School, who will be expected to embrace its student-centred, values-driven philosophy with enthusiasm and commitment. In addition, he/she will have major responsibility for strategic planning, overall financial and administrative management (and therefore experience in budgeting), human resources, land and assets, marketing and communications.
The ideal candidate for this important educational leadership position will be an experienced educator, as both a teacher and administrator, but will also be a team player who is outgoing and empathetic to the various stakeholders in the school community. He/she will have a commitment to elementary education, and will enable innovation in terms of The Priory School’s pedagogy. Ideally, this individual will have the capacity to function effectively in both English and French.
The search process is now underway. The ultimately successful candidate would be able to start in August 2019 or at a mutually agreed time in the upcoming school year.
