Kindergarten

The Priory Kindergarten is designed to provide an intensive start to French learning experiences. Learning through play, exploration and experimentation are important components of the program. Through these mediums, children learn to express themselves confidently, interact harmoniously with others and gain a better understanding of the world around them. Learning through play allows each child to build a strong foundation from which to begin elementary school.

English Language Arts

Language arts four basic components of listening, speaking, reading and writing are the cornerstones of The Priory's Kindergarten program. Listening skills are developed by teaching the child the importance of listening to the teacher, to his peers and to stories and factual information. Speaking skills are enhanced by allowing the child to hear the "fine" language of good literature and the standard speech patterns found therein, as well as encouraging the child to use those patterns to describe his understanding of the world. The child is invited to participate in discussions and playacting, a verbal dimension of the Kindergarten program. Reading skills are developed by teaching the child alphabet letter and sound recognition. This is accomplished with the use of alphabet bags, alphabet printing books and the Jolly Phonics program. Writing Skills are taught formally in showing the child the proper way to form letters of the alphabet and creatively in allowing the child to experiment in putting spoken words into print. By implementing each of the four aforementioned skills, the Kindergarten child is exposed to a well-rounded language arts program.

Science, Social Studies and Technology

Science excites and intrigues children to learn more about the wondrous world we live in. One science topic is chosen per month and is incorporated into all subject areas. Topics include hibernation, migration, dinosaurs, space etc.

The social studies program is geared to expose the children to different lifestyles, traditions and customs. As was the case with science, social studies are taught as a major theme from which all subjects are integrated. Community helpers, Canada's Native Peoples and a celebration of our cultural diversities are but some of the topics that have been covered.

Technology allows our students to take the knowledge that they have acquired in language arts, math and science etc. and apply it to games and problem solving situations.

Mathematics

The objective of the Kindergarten math program is to develop mathematical thinking, reasoning and problem solving skills in each child through a math program that is concept-oriented and based on interactive learning. Numeration, logic, geometry and problem solving are taught by utilizing a hands-on approach.
